The 17th edition of the festival, organized by Duplacena, will showcase videos from both Portuguese and international artists. The event, offering free entry, will focus on themes such as global warming, extreme weather events, revolutionary events, and turbulent political periods, according to the program.
Exhibitions and discussions will take place in outdoor spaces and cultural institutions throughout the city, including the National Museum of Contemporary Art, Palácio Sinel de Cordes, Palácio Galveias, the Praça do Carvão at the Museum of Art, Architecture, and Technology, Duplacena 77, and the Puppet Museum.
According to the organization, a key aspect of the festival is promoting new national creations, with each edition featuring a competition aimed at disseminating, recognizing, and encouraging emerging artists.
This year, Fuso received 208 proposals, demonstrating the vitality of creative work in Portugal, announced the artistic director of the event, curator, and art historian Jean-François Chougnet in July.
For this edition’s competition, open to video artists living and working in Portugal or of Portuguese nationality, works by 13 artists created between 2023 and 2025 were selected.
Among the artists are Alexandre Lyra Leite (‘Vozes e Ar Pesado’ 2025), Carla Cruz (‘Fins’, 2024), Eva Pelúcia (‘Morte de Vénus’, 2024), Inês Ventura (‘Menina do Mar’, 2025), Laís Andrade (‘My Ray of Sunshine’, 2024), Nuno Veiga (‘I am a word and also its echo’, 2024), Sama (Eduardo Felipe Dutra) (‘Elon’, 2024), Sara Massa (‘Reviralha’, 2025), Stephanie Monica (‘eColonialism’, 2024), Welket Bungué (‘O Colon (The Settler)’, 2023).
In addition to the finalists, Inês Carneiro and Sara Neves (Coletivo Nicho) were selected for their work “Gesto” (2023), Jonathan Uliel Saldanha and Vera Mantero (O Rumo do Fumo) for ‘The Breaking Point’ (2023), as well as LealVeileby (António Leal and Jesper Veileby) with ‘N’ (2025).
The artworks selected by Fuso’s artistic director are said to reflect the issues traversing contemporary times and social structures through images, sounds, bodies, and songs, stated Jean-François Chougnet in a communication from the organization issued a month ago.
These videos will be presented on Wednesday at 10:00 p.m. at the Museum of Art and Architecture (MAAT Central – Praça do Carvão) and will compete for the Acquisition Prize by Fundação EDP/MAAT, chosen by MAAT, and the Duplacena Incentive Prize, chosen by the public.
The festival will also hold the Fuso Insular edition, which will take place in São Miguel, Azores, from October 23 to 26.
