Hot weather leaves 13 districts under orange warning until Monday.

Évora, Faro, Setúbal, Beja, and Portalegre have been placed under an orange alert due to “the persistence of very high maximum temperature values,” effective from midnight today until 11 p.m. on Monday, as stated by the IPMA.

Due to the forecast of hot weather, the IPMA has also issued an orange alert for Bragança, Viseu, Guarda, Vila Real, Santarém, Lisbon, Castelo Branco, and Coimbra from midnight Sunday until 11 p.m. Monday. These eight districts are under a yellow alert until midnight Sunday.

Porto, Viana do Castelo, Leiria, Aveiro, and Braga will also be under a yellow alert from 9 a.m. today until 11 p.m. on Monday.

The orange alert, the second most severe on a scale of three, is issued by the IPMA whenever there is a “meteorological situation of moderate to high risk,” while the yellow alert, the least severe, is issued when there is a risk for certain activities dependent on the meteorological situation.

The National Authority for Emergency and Civil Protection (ANEPC) announced on Friday that it would enhance the readiness level for combating rural fires this weekend due to the forecast of extreme heat in mainland Portugal.

The Directorate-General for Health (DGS) warned that situations of extreme heat pose health risks, recommending drinking water, avoiding alcoholic beverages, and opting for cool or air-conditioned environments.

In a set of recommendations published online, the DGS reminds citizens of the IPMA warnings, which predict a rise in temperatures, with maximums possibly exceeding 40 degrees in some regions, urging caution among residents.
