Elderly Woman Rescued from Flooded Home in Modivas
Valdemar Maia, the chief of the Vila do Conde Fire Department, confirmed that an elderly woman was stranded in her home in Modivas due to flooding caused by severe weather. She remains in contact with firefighters, removing the immediate necessity for a river rescue.
Overnight heavy rains have led to flooding in multiple homes across the Modivas, Árvore, and Gião parishes in the Vila do Conde area, resulting in several road closures.
The Vila do Conde Fire Department was actively assisting residents, according to the department chief, who acknowledged the need for more personnel and has requested off-duty firefighters to assist.
The Lage Creek overflowed its banks, necessitating the closure of National Road 13 and Lage Street, as announced by the Modivas Parish Council on Facebook.
The Modivas Parish Council urged residents to exercise “understanding and care,” noting that the community experienced widespread flooding because of “severe storms overnight,” which resulted in the closure of Lage Street and EN 13 (Viso) due to the creek’s overflow.
Reports to the Sub-regional Command for Emergency and Civil Protection in Porto’s metropolitan area detailed floods on Gião do Fundo Street and Árvore Street in Vila do Conde, recorded at 09:21 and 08:56.
Between midnight and 8 a.m., continental Portugal recorded 198 incidents due to severe weather, especially in Porto’s metropolitan area. As conditions improved, incidents lessened, with Porto’s metropolitan region experiencing 97, and Aveiro reporting 50.
Viana do Castelo, Porto, Viseu, Aveiro, Coimbra, Portalegre, Santarém, and Lisbon districts, along with Madeira’s southern coast and mountainous areas, are on yellow alert due to predictions of heavy rain and thunderstorms.
The entire western and southern coasts of Portugal are under a yellow alert for maritime agitation.
