Housing: Government “will not change the rules halfway through the game,” says Montenegro

Prime Minister Luís Montenegro spoke at the finance contract signing ceremony for affordable housing with the European Investment Bank (EIB), which took place at the official residence of the Prime Minister in Lisbon.

According to the Prime Minister, the contract signed today will enable “an additional 12,000 homes in a short period,” primarily aimed at the middle class.

“Much of the reduction in investment in the housing sector was due to instability, lack of predictability, and lack of confidence in the market, and we want to provide that confidence,” he said.

The Prime Minister emphasized, as he has in recent days, the country’s economic and financial situation.

“It is a credit to believe that the rules will not change mid-game, and if they do, it will be for the better,” he said.

The Government and the European Investment Bank (EIB) approved a credit line totaling 1.34 billion euros to promote public affordable housing in Portugal, involving the construction and renovation of approximately 12,000 homes for affordable rent, according to a statement from the Ministry of Infrastructure and Housing.

Today marked the signing of the first tranche of the loan, valued at 450 million euros, in a ceremony presided over by the Prime Minister and attended by the Minister of Infrastructure and Housing, Miguel Pinto Luz, and the Minister of State and Finance, Joaquim Miranda Sarmento.
