With the theme “End the Genocide! Recognition of the State of Palestine Now!”, the demonstration began at 18:00 in Largo do Chiado, Lisbon. It was co-organized by the Movement for the Rights of the Palestinian People and Peace in the Middle East (MPPM) along with the Portuguese Council for Peace and Cooperation (CPPC), Project Noise – Youth Association, and the General Confederation of Portuguese Workers (CGTP).
The protest gathered various political leaders, including the Secretary-General of the Communist Party of Portugal (PCP), Paulo Raimundo, the coordinator of the Left Bloc, Mariana Mortágua, and the Livre party MP, Jorge Pinto.
Since October 2023, Israel’s military campaign has resulted in the deaths of 55,300 Palestinians, more than half of whom were women and children, according to the Gaza Health Ministry.
Israel launched the campaign with the aim of destroying Hamas following the group’s attack in southern Israel on October 7, 2023, which left 1,200 people dead, mostly civilians, and resulted in over 250 hostages, 53 of whom remain in captivity, with uncertainty about how many are still alive.
