Hundreds of local administration workers marched today from Largo Camões to the parliament in Lisbon at 11:00 a.m., demanding salary increases and allowances in response to the rising cost of living.
The demonstration, organized by the Local Administration Workers Union (STAL), saw participation from worker representatives across the country.
Banners leading the protest bore phrases such as “Urban transport drivers of Coimbra fighting for their careers,” “Exploited, yes! Defeated, never!,” “Portugal Waters workers fighting for professional recognition,” “EGEAC workers demand salary increases,” and “Lisbon municipality workers fighting for wages, careers, and future.”
The protest included municipal workers and representatives from local enterprise sector companies, as well as other professions related to the local sector, such as firefighters, water services, and urban transport.
The STAL stated that the workers are demanding salary raises for all positions, including operational assistants, technical assistants, and senior technicians.
STAL has backed the wage demands of the Common Front and other Public Administration unions, proposing an interim revision of the minimum wage to reach 1,000 euros this year, with a minimum increase of 150 euros for all workers.
Additionally, workers are calling for an increase in meal allowances, overall career valuation, and the restoration of local administration careers.
