“I already have a program in place with the Ministry of Infrastructure. We have been working for about three months on the eradication of Cova da Moura, and I will definitely eradicate it all,” stated the social-democratic candidate in a statement.
Suzana Garcia, who previously ran for the presidency of Amadora’s City Council in the 2021 local elections, explained that the program being developed with the Government involves demolishing all illegal constructions and shanties, assuring the subsequent relocation of more than 2,000 families to new housing.
The intervention will include the creation of public facilities, green spaces, public housing for the middle class, and “modern infrastructure.”
Also in the housing sector, the candidate plans to build 2,500 units for the middle class, with affordable rents, emphasizing that Amadora “was the only municipality in the Lisbon Metropolitan Area that did not build housing in the last 12 years.”
Another priority for Suzana Garcia is urban hygiene, which she described as “one of the city’s worst issues,” promising an immediate intervention plan.
“I would like to walk the streets without seeing cockroaches, rats, and garbage. I would like Amadora to be an exemplary reference in the Lisbon Metropolitan Area,” she noted.
In health, the campaign proposes the construction of three new health centers, specifically in Venteira, Venda Nova, and Alfragide.
Suzana Garcia also advocated for the creation of 2,000 new daycare slots through the construction of four new facilities.
Besides Suzana Garcia, candidates for the Amadora City Council include the current president, Vítor Ferreira (PS), João Pimenta Lopes (PCP/PEV), Anabela Ferreira (BE), Rui Paulo Sousa (Chega), and Hugo Lourenço (Livre).
In the current term, 2021-2025, the executive of the Amadora City Council, led by Vítor Ferreira, consists of six elected members from the PS (including the president), three from the coalition Dar Voz à Amadora (PSD/CDS-PP/Aliança/MPT/PDR), and one from CDU.
The next local elections are scheduled for October 12.
