At the conclusion of the Superior Council for Internal Security meeting, which approved the Annual Internal Security Report (RASI), Luís Montenegro was questioned about whether he could discuss these issues during the campaign, as nearly all opposition attacks focus on his business life.
“I am committed to providing Portuguese men and women with solutions to their problems. I have no concerns, and I am not suspected of anything regarding my professional and financial life,” he stated, arguing that he has been “the target of many unproven anonymous accusations.”
“Those who cling to this to conduct political battles demonstrate they have few arguments,” he accused, opting not to answer further media questions.
PS Secretary-General Pedro Nuno Santos has argued that a potential PSD victory in the anticipated May 18 legislative elections would sustain instability in Portugal, alleging the country would have a prime minister “permanently overshadowed” by suspicions.
“Ethics is an important dimension, but so is stability. If, ultimately, Luís Montenegro wins the elections, we would have a prime minister permanently overshadowed by suspicions and doubts, hence instability would persist in Portugal,” Pedro Nuno Santos stated to journalists on Friday during a visit to Futurália in Lisbon.
These early elections were announced by the President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, on March 13, two days after parliament rejected a motion of confidence in the Government, leading to the resignation of the PSD/CDS-PP Government.
This motion was announced by the prime minister on March 5, citing the need for “political clarification” after weeks of questions regarding the financial and personal life of Luís Montenegro and the family business Spinumviva. It prompted two motions of censure against the Government, from Chega and the PCP, both rejected, and the PS announced plans to present an inquiry commission into the matter.
