Following the presentation of Miguel Morgado’s book ‘Introduction to Liberalism’ in Lisbon, which featured an address from Pedro Passos Coelho, João Cotrim Figueiredo was queried about the possibility of the former prime minister endorsing his candidacy.
“I clearly think so. I believe that, from a political orientation standpoint, I am the candidate closest to what Pedro Passos Coelho might want to achieve in Portugal,” he stated.
The presidential candidate, supported by the Liberal Initiative (IL), suggested that having a President of the Republic with his attitude alongside a prime minister like Pedro Passos Coelho would be a unique opportunity the country hasn’t experienced in the past 30-35 years to effectively implement necessary reforms.
When asked if he had spoken with Pedro Passos Coelho on this matter, Cotrim Figueiredo replied: “I believe these endorsements are not something you ask for; they tend to occur naturally, especially with someone possessing the political capital of Pedro Passos Coelho.”
“So, let’s see what the coming months hold for us,” he remarked.
In July, Cotrim Figueiredo mentioned having conversations with many people before deciding to launch a presidential bid. He was asked if Pedro Passos Coelho was among those consulted.
“I speak with many people, including some who were in this room today,” he stated.
Regarding whether he would like Pedro Passos Coelho’s support, the former IL leader expressed a desire for the backing “of all those with liberal leanings who have a future-oriented concern for Portugal and wish to express themselves in today’s political discourse.”
“All are welcome, regardless of party,” he asserted.
In September, at a national municipal meeting organized by the Liberal Initiative, João Cotrim Figueiredo declared that his candidacy extends “far beyond” his original party and is “much broader.”
“I already have significant support from leaders, former leaders, and even founders of the PSD, PS, Chega, CDS, which I will announce soon, after the municipal elections,” he stated at the time without divulging names.
