“I can’t excuse my daughter,” admits José Manuel Anes after attack

Former President of the Observatory for Security, Organized Crime, and Terrorism (OSCOT), José Manuel Anes, revealed in an interview with SIC that he has not fully recovered from the attempted homicide committed by his daughter on October 20th and struggles to forgive her, despite acknowledging her mental health issues.

The university professor recounted the terrifying moments on the Casa Feliz program.

“I was at my friend’s house waiting for a package she was expecting. When the doorbell rang, I slightly opened the door; she pushed it open, knocked me down, and started beating me. This went on for about 15 to 20 minutes. Fortunately, a neighbor opened their door, was alarmed by the noise… I was shouting for help, but I’m not sure if they heard me. Regardless, I said: it’s the police, they’re going to arrest you. She then got up and left. I was lucky,” he recalled, noting he was also stabbed during the attack, though initially unaware of it.

“There was so much hitting that I didn’t even notice the stabbings, but I was bleeding profusely.” He remembered, revealing he was stabbed in the hand tendons, the stomach, affecting the small intestine, and the leg. Additionally, it left him with a “brain hematoma” needing ongoing attention.

During the assault, his daughter repeatedly told him, with a maniacal expression: “You will die, you will die, you will die.”

After she fled “fearing the police,” José Manuel Anes spent “nearly two hours unable” to get up, “bleeding profusely.”

Fortunately, his routine of lunching at a nearby restaurant played a role. “My absence was noticed, and they called my friend, who came from outside Lisbon to find me in that state. She immediately called 112 and the police. The response was swift, and they handled the situation very competently,” he explained.

Anes believes the motive behind the attempted murder involved a house in Costa da Caparica that Ana Anes wanted for herself.

“I’m not sure if it was merely a psychotic episode. She planned everything meticulously. It’s not just that. The posts she made before and after. That my dad died or will die, I blinded my dad,” he stated, asserting she truly believed she had killed him.

For Anes, the “moral pain” is the hardest to bear. “That’s difficult to overcome; even if she comes with excuses now, I won’t consider them […]. I can’t forgive my daughter,” he confessed.

During the interview, Anes confirmed that his daughter has a psychiatric disorder diagnosis and was once medicated but stopped taking the medication years ago. Despite that and her crises, he never imagined Ana wanted to kill him.

“Sometimes she’d say, ‘Dad, let’s have lunch, I love you,’ and other times, ‘Dad, you are a disgrace’,” he admitted.

It should be noted that on October 20th, the former President of OSCOT, aged 81, was hospitalized in serious condition at Hospital de São José in Lisbon after being stabbed by his daughter.

Ana Anes, who has since been detained and placed in a prison hospital, continued making social media posts about her father even after the attack. Anes, who is also a writer, believes she should remain in custody and receive medical support.

José Manuel Anes was stabbed on Monday at his residence and later taken to the hospital. His daughter, Ana Rawson, the prime suspect in the attack, is now under police “custody” and had posted various messages on social media following the incident.

The former President of OSCOT is not only a university professor but is also renowned as a criminologist. After his presidency at the observatory, he became the President of its Advisory Council and has served as the editor of the magazine Segurança e Defesa since its inception.

Anes was instrumental in founding the support group for Gouveia e Melo’s presidential campaign, from which he later distanced himself, even calling for its dissolution.
