I have a deep respect for doctors working in war contexts.

The National Federation of Doctors (Fnam) paid tribute to doctors and other healthcare professionals who, in conflict zones and humanitarian crises, risk their lives daily to save others.

Many are working under extremely adverse conditions in countries like Bangladesh, Myanmar, Yemen, Mozambique (Cabo Delgado), Palestine (Gaza and the West Bank), the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the Sahel region (Niger, Mali, or Burkina Faso), and Ukraine, striving to fulfill their mission of caring for populations affected by violence and suffering, according to Fnam.

The President of the Order of Doctors, Carlos Cortes, emphasized the urgent need for an immediate ceasefire and comprehensive protection for healthcare professionals in conflict zones.

Doctors have the moral and professional authority to combat violence, ensure medical protection, and advocate for public policies that prioritize life and human dignity over military or political interests, stated the President. This call, supported by Fnam today, already has backing from around fifty associations and organizations.

“It is essential for doctors in Portugal and worldwide to reinforce their active and influential voice for global peace,” highlighted the President in the document.

According to Fnam, medicine can be practiced in war scenarios, but it finds its true purpose in peace.
