“I begin by mourning the tragic news of Carlos Dâmaso’s passing, a former mayor of Vila Franca de Deão, as he defended his village and its people,” António José Seguro stated to the Lusa agency during his visit to the burnt areas in Celorico de Basto, Braga district.
The former socialist secretary-general also extended “a strong embrace of solidarity” to firefighters, civil protection officials, and local leaders, commending their efforts in defending the country.
“I listened to many affected people and entrepreneurs, met with civil protection authorities. Yesterday [Thursday] I discreetly visited burnt areas, met with local leaders and entrepreneurs. Today I am here, where I should be, alongside our firefighters and civil protection and visiting burnt areas. I am where I should be with the people,” he emphasized.
The presidential candidate also highlighted the importance of prevention.
“This summer cannot be repeated. There cannot be tears in the summer and indifference the rest of the year. We must unite to overcome this wildfire tragedy. The country must focus on prevention,” he stated.
Portugal has been on high alert due to wildfire risks since August 2, and in recent weeks, several fires have erupted in the north and center of the country, consuming more than half of the approximately 75,000 hectares burnt this year.
The alert status was extended until Sunday, announced the Minister of Internal Administration, Maria Lúcia Amaral, on Thursday following a visit to the ANEPC.
“In light of the adversity of 22 consecutive days of intense heat showing no signs of slowing down, the Government will once again extend the alert status until Sunday,” the minister told journalists.
