The Socialist candidate for Porto City Hall, Manuel Pizarro, today praised the election of José Luís Carneiro as the new secretary-general of the PS, commending him for having the courage to take on the party “in a very difficult moment.”
“I greatly commend Dr. José Luís Carneiro’s courage for assuming the responsibility of leading the PS at a very challenging time for the Socialist Party. I am hopeful that he will do so with a spirit of moderation and social integration, which is very important for the PS in Portuguese society and for Portuguese society as a whole,” stated Manuel Pizarro while speaking to journalists during a campaign event in Porto.
José Luís Carneiro became the 10th secretary-general of the PS on Saturday, succeeding Pedro Nuno Santos, who resigned following the electoral setback in the last legislative elections.
According to provisional results obtained on Saturday, with 92% of the votes counted and 27 sections still to be tallied, José Luís Carneiro was elected PS secretary-general with 95.4%, accounting for 17,214 votes, with 693 blank and 128 null votes.
The turnout for this election, in which Carneiro was the sole candidate, stood at 48.3%.
