Iberian Nanotechnology Laboratory signs agreement with Fiocruz

The Fiocruz has signed a memorandum of understanding formalizing a five-year international cooperation agreement focused on research, technological development, production, and training in the field of nanotechnology and its applications in biotechnology and health.

Fiocruz President Mario Moreira emphasized the significance of the agreement by describing Fiocruz and the INL as leading global entities in public health and nanotechnology, respectively. This signing event took place in Lisbon on April 23, at the official residence of the Brazilian Ambassador to Portugal, Raimundo Carreiro.

According to a statement from the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation released on Tuesday, the agreement between the INL, established through a bilateral agreement between Portugal and Spain, and Fiocruz was signed by Mario Moreira and Ado Jório Vasconcelos, the Deputy Director-General of INL and Professor at the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG).

The Oswaldo Cruz Foundation indicates that both institutions are powerful and complementary in the life sciences area.

INL’s expertise in biomedical engineering and Fiocruz’s connection to one of the largest public health systems in the world were highlighted by the INL Director-General.

The memorandum outlines joint actions such as cooperation on projects, researcher and student mobility, scientific events organization, information sharing, and financing mechanisms, aiming to deliver research and innovation benefits to society.

This memorandum signing aligns with the agenda discussed at the XIV Brazil-Portugal Summit in Brasília last February, as stated in the joint declaration.

The agreement underscores positive cooperation prospects in nanoscience and nanotechnology, reflecting the commitment to strengthen bilateral science, technology, and innovation agendas.

Fiocruz, linked to the Ministry of Health, is renowned for its scientific research and technological development in Brazilian health, recognized as a leading organization in health science and technology in Latin America.

Founded in 2005 through a joint decision by the Governments of Portugal and Spain, the INL is an international research organization focused on cutting-edge nanotechnology research and development. Since 2010, it has been operating as an innovation center providing a high-tech research environment.
