“Comrade Pedro Nuno, if my parents were alive, I am certain they would be on the front lines against this vengeful right wing, populism, hate speech, xenophobia, and the growing inequality between the very rich and those who have nothing,” declared Isabel Soares at a rally in Coimbra, where the Secretary-General of the Socialist Party concluded today’s campaign activities.
She continued: “They would certainly stand with you in the unwavering defense of the National Health Service (SNS) and in the fight against its privatization, in advocating for a demanding education for all, in the battle for judicial reform and against collusion with certain parts of the press. It is important not to forget this.”
Furthermore, Isabel Soares emphasized their stance “in the relentless fight” to ensure “Portugal does not return to the past.”
“We must prevent this at all costs,” asserted Isabel Soares, also noting that Mário Soares and Maria Barroso would be staunch defenders of peace and would firmly oppose the ongoing genocide against the Palestinian people.
The socialist urged for mobilization ahead of Sunday’s election.
“Everyone must take responsibility. Until Sunday, each of us, as socialists, must mobilize, in the street, in the neighborhood, at work, everywhere, to convince the undecided that their vote can make a difference and defend the achievements of April. This is very important. We all must mobilize,” she stressed.
Isabel Soares also mentioned the “very complex and difficult global situation” we are currently experiencing, which “requires courage, competence, and serenity,” underscoring the critical nature of the upcoming Sunday election.
“Let us not forget that we are holding elections because Luís Montenegro provoked them and desired them to play the victim. It is important to remember this. He claims he wants to be the beacon of the country, and we have heard others say the Soviet Union was the sun of the earth. We don’t need a beacon; we need a responsible and competent government, something we did not have in the past year,” she noted.
She also highlighted that the Secretary-General of the Socialist Party, Pedro Nuno Santos, “clearly demonstrated the responsibility of the socialists by enabling the election for President of the Assembly of the Republic, facilitating the State Budget, and voting against motions of no confidence from other parties.”
“It is important not to forget this; no one is more responsible and concerned about the country and the Portuguese people. He has proven this,” she affirmed.
During her speech, she received several standing ovations from the gathered socialist militants and sympathizers at the PS rally, held at the Pavilion Centro de Portugal.
