IGAS opens investigation into fetal death after assistance to pregnant woman in Coimbra

The Inspectorate General of Health Activities (IGAS) has initiated an inquiry into a recent incident involving the death of a fetus at the maternity unit of the Local Health Unit of Coimbra, E.P.E. This announcement was made following reports published on November 4 and 5, 2025. The IGAS aims to evaluate the circumstances surrounding the care provided to a woman in late pregnancy, where her unborn child passed away.

The Health Regulatory Authority (ERS) is also examining the tragic incident after the family accused the hospital of negligence and inadequate medical care.

This incident was reported today, having occurred at the Daniel de Matos Maternity department within the Local Health Unit of Coimbra. The pregnant woman, aged 43, sought medical help after feeling unwell.

Reports indicate that the woman had been receiving prenatal care at the Bissaya Barreto Maternity, with her last appointment on the preceding Thursday revealing no issues.

The family alleges negligence and plans to file a complaint against the Local Health Unit of Coimbra.

Contacted regarding these events, the ERS noted it had been informed through media reports and is currently conducting an administrative review.

The Local Health Unit of Coimbra reported that the woman, experiencing a hemorrhage at home, was admitted to Dr. Daniel de Matos Maternity’s emergency department on November 1 at 10:29 PM. She had been receiving proper monitoring at Bissaya Barreto Maternity, with normal clinical evaluations, ultrasound, and cardiotocography results from her last visit on October 29.

Upon her arrival at the emergency department, further diagnostic tests were ordered, revealing a lack of fetal vitality through cardiotocography, which was immediately confirmed via ultrasound. A cesarean section was performed due to a pre-existing gynecological condition, and both ultrasound and genetic assessments confirmed prior fetal demise.

An anatomical pathology study was initiated as per protocol, with results pending. The Local Health Unit has assured that the patient was fully informed of the situation and offered psychological support.
