IL accuses humanitarian flotilla of diverting attention from negotiations

“This is not how issues are resolved,” said Mariana Leitão during a campaign stop in Leiria, stressing that “we spent too much time observing the development of the trip when the focus should be on the international progress we are making” to achieve “peace agreements that address the conflict in that region” and free “Palestine from Hamas, ensuring the removal of a terrorist organization.”

The IL leader expressed “serious doubts” about Mariana Mortágua’s intent to genuinely deliver humanitarian aid: “It is not credible to believe that a member of the nation, fully aware of how these things work, thought she could reach Gaza with her flotilla and deliver humanitarian aid.”

Regarding the return of the four activists to Portugal on Sunday night, Mariana Leitão noted it was “good news that they all arrived safely” and highlighted “the work of the consular services, which have been monitoring the situation from the start and ensured this safe return.”

Currently, “international negotiations are underway to truly resolve the issue,” which are “moving in the right direction” to “achieve peace agreements,” Leitão stated, referencing the U.S. proposal.

“That should be the path: diplomatic solutions and concrete measures to achieve peace in that conflict,” stated the liberal leader.

On the matter of humanitarian aid, “it is obvious that we must also trust that there are organizations performing their duties, with this specific mission, and doing it well,” despite “some constraints,” added the IL leader.
