
The leader of IL, Mariana Leitão, expressed her sorrow over the “tragic accident” in Lisbon through a message on social media, offering “heartfelt condolences to the families and friends of the victims”.
“It is crucial that a thorough investigation is conducted to determine the causes and ensure all necessary procedures are implemented to prevent such a tragedy from happening again,” said the IL leader.
Similarly, CDS-PP leader Nuno Melo lamented the accident, describing it as a “tragedy that caused deep shock and consternation in Portugal and worldwide”.
“On behalf of myself and CDS, I express full solidarity and offer heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims, wishing a speedy recovery to the injured,” wrote the Minister of National Defense on X.
The Ascensor da Glória in Lisbon derailed on Wednesday at 18:04 on Calçada da Glória.
INEM announced that the accident resulted in 15 deaths and 18 injuries, including five in serious condition and 13 with minor injuries.
The Government declared a national day of mourning for Thursday.
The Ascensor da Glória, managed by Carris, connects Restauradores to Jardim de São Pedro de Alcântara in Bairro Alto, covering approximately 265 meters and is a popular attraction for tourists.
