The date for the elective convention was decided today by the National Council of the party, which gathered at a hotel in Almada, in the Setúbal district.
“The National Council of Iniciativa Liberal, meeting today in Almada, approved with 50 votes in favor and 11 abstentions, the scheduling of the convention that will elect the new president and their executive committee,” read a statement released this evening.
The forthcoming convention will take place in the district of Leiria, though the party has not specified the exact location.
These elections follow Rui Rocha’s resignation as president of IL at the end of May, effective immediately, after two and a half years of leadership.
The outgoing leader acknowledged that the party did not achieve “the prominence that everyone wished for” in the legislative elections of May 18, where it managed to elect nine deputies, one more than in the previous elections in 2024.
Meanwhile, IL’s parliamentary leader Mariana Leitão has already announced her candidacy for the party leadership.
The last National Convention of IL took place in February this year in Loures, where Rui Rocha was re-elected leader, defeating Rui Malheiro.
