IL joins PSD in Porto and joins the coalition led by Pedro Duarte

The Liberal Initiative (IL) National Council convened today in Almada, Setúbal district, to approve 30 municipal election candidates, including 17 with independent lists and the rest in coalition.

The announced coalitions involve partnerships with the PSD and CDS-PP, or just one of these parties.

In a statement, the party revealed its decision to run independently in the municipal races of Cascais, Oeiras, Almada, Setúbal, Santarém, Viana do Castelo, Castelo Branco, Ponte de Lima, Santa Maria da Feira, Oliveira de Azeméis, São João da Madeira, Vila Nova de Famalicão, Vila Verde, Figueira da Foz, Albufeira, Caldas da Rainha, and Torres Vedras.

In the upcoming local elections, IL will participate in coalitions for the municipalities of Porto, Santo Tirso, Loulé, Portimão, Vizela, Mirandela, Covilhã, Silves, Bombarral, Arruda dos Vinhos, Almeirim, Montijo, and Santa Comba Dão.

For Porto, the PSD candidate is former Minister of Parliamentary Affairs, Pedro Duarte.

Earlier, in April, the CDS-PP Porto division decided to support the social-democrat’s candidacy, though the party has yet to officially confirm joining this coalition.

In Santo Tirso, PSD candidate Ricardo Pereira confirmed the coalition with CDS-PP and IL at the start of the month, but the Christian Democrats’ local branch later withdrew from the agreement over “certain positions” taken by the social-democrat committee.

The municipal elections are scheduled to occur between September and October this year.
