Eva Cruzeiro, a Socialist Party (PS) candidate in the upcoming snap legislative elections, posted on social media last Friday evening to express her solidarity with the Ukrainian people and her opposition to Russian President Vladimir Putin’s imperialism, following a controversial video of her that went viral.
Known as Eva RapDiva, the rapper and political science graduate had a freestyle moment go viral on social media due to her comments on the war in Ukraine. Although the video is over two years old, it resurfaced after her announcement as the eighth candidate on the PS list for Lisbon.
“I’m African, I don’t care about the war in Ukraine. Let them kill each other like we kill each other. They don’t care about us, so we don’t care about them,” she rapped.
In response to the controversy generated by the improvised lyrics, the rapper, whose parents are Angolan and who was born in Portugal, addressed the matter on social media.
“The creative freedom of an artist like me—especially in the characteristic freestyle of rap, something I’ve been doing since I was 12 and something we, as rap artists, often do in an attempt to have an impact, sometimes saying obscene things, that’s a fact—cannot reveal my political stance. I am completely against Putin’s imperialism and wholly against Donald Trump’s irrational policies,” she clarified in a video shared on the platform X.
“I stand with the Ukrainian people, just as I stand with the Palestinian people and all peoples who suffer aggression against peace and international law,” she added.
Estou ao lado do povo ucraniano, tal como estou ao lado do povo palestiniano e de todos os povos que sofrem agressões à paz e ao Direito Internacional. pic.twitter.com/KwbY8tkAzT
