“Immigrants demanded security and ‘justice’ in front of the Ministry of Internal Administration”

The incident took place in Feijó, Almada, claiming the life of Mahabubul Alam from Bangladesh.

The peaceful demonstration organized in Lisbon by Casa do Bangladesh, joined by other associations, consisted almost entirely of men displaying banners and signs demanding justice.

Brazilian Nina Martins, representing the Movimento Vida Justa, was among the four women in attendance.

“We support this cause. I think we need to fight, investigate, and seek justice,” she told Lusa on-site, as the gathering formed and spread across Praça do Comércio.

Immigrants desire Portugal to be “safe and fair,” they asserted.

“We have several Bangladeshi traders here in Portugal. It’s not about racism. It’s a matter of crime. It’s up to the police to investigate and determine responsibilities,” said Roni Hossan from Casa do Bangladesh.

Rana Taslin, the community leader, submitted a written request to the Ministry of Internal Administration to ensure justice in the murdered trader’s case and to enhance security for immigrants from Bangladesh and other Asian countries who joined the demonstration.

“Now someone has been killed, but for two years there have been many problems, with the torture of immigrants in various places, and there are several complaints. This is a negligence of the authorities,” he told reporters after leaving the ministry.

He estimated the Bangladeshi community living in Portugal to number around 50,000, with 20,000 residing in the Lisbon Metropolitan Area.

According to PSP, the crime occurred on the night of June 13. The two suspects fled, and the case was handed over to the Judiciary Police.
