In the Lisbon region, GNR detained 50 drivers in 4 hours (47 for drunkenness)

The National Traffic Unit (UNT) of the GNR conducted an operation today from 3:00 a.m. to 7:00 a.m., inspecting 2,598 drivers, resulting in 50 arrests, 47 of which were for driving under the influence of alcohol with a blood alcohol level exceeding 1.2 g/l.

An additional 245 administrative offense reports were issued, 213 of which were for driving under the influence of alcohol.

The GNR stated that those arrested were made defendants and notified to appear before the Public Prosecutor’s Office.

The operation took place on major access routes to the Lisbon Metropolitan Area, particularly at Ponte Vasco da Gama in Alcochete, Setúbal district; Highway 1 (A1) in Alverca, Lisbon district; Highway 2 (A2) in Seixal, Setúbal district; Highway 5 (A5) in Oeiras, Lisbon district; Highway 8 (A8) in Loures, Lisbon district; and Complementary Route 20 (IC20) in Almada, Setúbal district.

This special road inspection action also included reinforcement from Territorial Command units of Évora, Leiria, Lisbon, Setúbal, and Santarém, involving a total of 143 military personnel.

The National Republican Guard reminds that beyond the criminal severity, driving under the influence of alcohol is one of the main risk factors for driving, contributing significantly to road accidents.

According to the Highway Code, driving under the influence of alcohol or psychotropic substances is prohibited. The legislation states that a blood alcohol level equal to or exceeding 0.5 g/l is illegal, and a level of 1.2 g/l or higher is considered a crime punishable by imprisonment.
