Socialist Isabel Moreira expressed on Saturday that the discussion surrounding the Socialist Party’s (PS) candidate lists for the upcoming legislative elections is “positive,” while criticizing other political parties, specifically the Social Democratic Party (PSD), for dismissing their internal opponents.
“In the PS, after electing a SG [secretary-general], we do not discard internal adversaries. We are not the PSD,” Moreira wrote on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter).
“This is why public discussion focuses so intently on the PS lists. Such debate is not relevant for other parties. This is good. Although much is said on the side, it is beneficial,” she added.
Notably, Socialist MP Sérgio Sousa Pinto, who was placed fourth on the list for Lisbon’s Political National Commission, informed the PS secretary-general, Pedro Nuno Santos, on Thursday that he declines to run as a candidate. Similarly, former Finance Minister Fernando Medina had previously announced at the end of March that he did not wish to be included as a candidate for the upcoming legislative elections.
In contrast, the former aspiring Socialist leader José Luís Carneiro will once again lead the PS list for the Braga electoral district.
Yesterday, when asked if he feels the party is united, Pedro Nuno Santos emphasized that “the lists were approved with 92% support” and that the PS has “all structures engaged and motivated, enthusiastic,” despite Sousa Pinto’s and Medina’s decisions, which were made for “different motivations” and “reasons.”
