“No verão, proteja-se das picadas frequentes de mosquitos!” How can you do this? The Directorate General of Health (DGS) provides guidance through a social media post, offering essential tips for Portuguese citizens to follow, particularly during this time of year.
Highlighting that “mosquitoes, flies, and ticks (vectors) can transmit diseases”, the DGS presents three recommendations to “protect oneself from bites”.
These are:
- “Wear light-colored, loose clothing that covers the skin;
- Avoid locations (stagnant water, dense vegetation) and times (early and late in the day) of peak vector activity;
- Apply repellent. Children: 10% DEET; Adults: 30% to 50% DEET”.
Another tip focuses on “eliminating mosquito breeding sites”. For this, one should “avoid objects that can accumulate water outdoors”, as well as “avoid using saucers under pots”.
It is also necessary to “keep water tanks covered”, “keep gutters clean and unclogged”, and “wash and change the water in animal drinking bowls regularly”.
Moreover, the DGS emphasizes that if you plan to travel, “do not forget to schedule a Traveler’s Consultation to receive the best advice”.

The Portuguese Institute of the Sea and the Atmosphere (IPMA) forecasts a temperature rise, which could exceed 40 degrees Celsius in some regions of mainland Portugal, especially in the interior, starting Thursday.
“There is a tendency for the anticyclone, located in the Azores region, to intensify and extend its ridge towards Central Europe from the 24th, causing an eastern flow and, consequently, a transport of hot and dry air over the Iberian Peninsula and the Madeira archipelago“, explained the IPMA in a statement released on Sunday.
The municipalities of Loulé, São Brás de Alportel, and Tavira, in the Faro district, are today at maximum risk of rural fire, according to the IPMA, which anticipates an aggravation of this risk in the coming days.
