Increase in violent crimes? “Police visibility will continue”

The Prime Minister, Luís Montenegro, views the data from the Annual Internal Security Report (RASI) as reinforcing the notion that “Portugal remains a safe country.” However, he assures that the “visibility of policing will continue” to address the increase in violent crimes observed in 2024.

“The Government’s policy of enhancing community policing, increasing police visibility, and conducting preventive operations against more violent criminal phenomena will continue and will be crucial in reducing certain violent instances that have seen a negative trend in 2024,” Montenegro stated during the presentation of the security report data.

The RASI is prepared by the Internal Security System and is approved by the Superior Council for Internal Security, an interministerial body for hearings and consultations on internal security matters, presided over by the Prime Minister.

In addition to the directors of the police forces and the Strategic Defense Intelligence Service and Security Intelligence Service, this body also includes the Ministers of Internal Administration, Presidency, Justice, National Defense, Finance and Public Works, Transport and Communications, as well as the Attorney General.
