“We had around 280 candidates, and currently, about 180 are in the competition after the knowledge tests, driving tests, and curriculum evaluations. We hope to have as many [TEPH] as possible in the end,” said the president of INEM during a Reflection Workshop on Pre-Hospital Emergency Medical Services of the Independent Technical Commission (CTI) of INEM at the Institute of Social and Political Sciences, University of Lisbon (ISCSP-UL).
Sérgio Janeiro emphasized that TEPH must possess “all the skills to assist colleagues” to “increase the scope of rescue” and “relieve the enormous overtime load that INEM’s work is still based on.”
In June, INEM announced the opening of a new public competition, set to take place in July, to recruit 200 more TEPH.
The positions were intended for the regional delegation of Lisbon, Vale do Tejo, and Alentejo, with an initial base salary of 1,126.7 euros per month.
When asked about the technicians dismissed after failing one of the training course modules, Sérgio Janeiro explained that the dismissals occurred due to lack of success.
“Those who did not succeed had their contracts terminated within the probationary period. And now, after the training, we can count on more than 149 pre-hospital emergency technicians out of 200,” he highlighted.
The president of INEM pointed out that the trainees “signed the contract on January 20, 2025, and entered a six-month probationary period” during which “necessary training was provided to fulfill their functions.”
Sérgio Janeiro also announced that 30 new TEPH from the recruitment pool will sign a contract next week to address the departures of human resources.
“After signing [the contract], [the 30 TEPH] will have to start a one-year probationary period, a result of the revision of the TEPH career, which came after the entry of the previous 200 and extended the probationary period to one year, so these 30 will be trained, and we hope they succeed,” he noted.
