The National Authority for Medicines and Health Products (Infarmed) has authorized the exceptional use of the medication Zoref, 250 mg/5 ml, granulate for oral suspension (1 unit – 100 ml), matching the dosage of the medication Zinnat, according to an informative circular published on its website.
Infarmed indicated that the packaging of the medication will include an informational leaflet in Portuguese.
“To facilitate accessibility to the medication, the registration number, price, and reimbursement by the National Health Service for this presentation will be the same as the medication authorized in Portugal, allowing prescription and dispensing to occur as usual,” it noted. Given the limited availability of this medication, Infarmed recommends that doctors prescribe this pediatric antibiotic only when no other antibiotic can be used.
Infarmed stated that guidance from the National Commission on Pharmacy and Therapeutics concerning the “Antibiotic Treatment of Respiratory Infections in Pediatrics” is available to assist in selecting alternatives.
