Infarmed warns of the sale of counterfeit blood sugar measuring devices

“These products, often presented in forms similar to oximeters, are frequently marketed under different brands with promises of quick, reliable, and painless results, including claims of being ‘approved’ by competent authorities”, stated an informational circular.

The document highlighted that Infarmed was alerted through cooperation with peer authorities to the increasing availability of devices allegedly designed to measure blood sugar levels non-invasively on various online platforms and social media. These devices claim to function without skin perforation.

The national authority further stated that there is no record of CE-marked non-invasive glucose measuring medical devices being marketed in Portugal.

“Products claiming this purpose are likely based on misleading claims”, warned the circular. It emphasized that “any reference to approval or certification by a competent authority” from an EU member state is false.

In response, Infarmed advised that “medical devices should be purchased from duly legalized economic operators”, urging consumers to avoid purchasing from unverified websites or online platforms due to the risks involved, including lack of assurance on quality, safety, and performance.
