A weather phenomenon at 10:07 a.m. caused damage at the Albufeira Camping Park, resulting in the death of an 85-year-old British citizen and injuries to five people, with additional damage reported in Lagoa and Silves.
In Silves, a similar event occurred at 11:48 a.m., causing structural damage and multiple trees to fall, leading to two people being displaced. They have since been rehoused by the Municipal Civil Protection Service, according to an official statement.
A communication from the Regional Command of the Algarve of the National Authority for Emergency and Civil Protection also informed that since the State of Special Readiness began at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday until 1:30 p.m. today, 412 incidents were registered in the Algarve, involving 973 operational staff and 353 vehicles.
“Operations to restore normalcy continue on the ground through municipal services, various Civil Protection agents, and cooperating entities,” the statement concluded, noting that further information will be issued if necessary.
Meanwhile, the Albufeira Camping Park has stated that the affected area by the strong winds “remains isolated and closed,” with the rest of the campsite evacuated according to authorities’ instructions.
