A 25-year-old inmate assaulted a prison guard, approximately 35, with a “homemade knife” on Monday afternoon, September 15, at Linhó Prison Facility.
This incident was confirmed by the National Union of Prison Guards (SNCGP). According to Frederico Morais, the president of SNCGP, the prison guard, who was responsible for a wing with about 30 inmates, was called to the attacker’s cell and was assaulted with a “homemade knife,” a type of shiv made inside the prison.
The guard sustained injuries to his hands and one arm while trying to defend himself. “Either you or me. One of us dies today,” the inmate allegedly said, who had previously assaulted another guard while still on remand in Leiria.
The victim received medical attention at Cascais Hospital and has filed a complaint with the Republican National Guard (GNR) of Alcabideche.
Meanwhile, as he is “not feeling better,” the union president told Notícias ao Minuto that the injured prison guard will visit a hospital again today and strengthen the complaint against the authorities.
Another prison guard was also reportedly “hurt” during the stabbing.
The union plans to become an assistant in the case, considering it an attempted murder of a prison guard.
The inmate, who was serving a prison sentence at Linhó for thefts and arson, was transferred to Monsanto Prison, a high-security facility for high-risk inmates, and is facing disciplinary proceedings.
