The Cardiovascular Intervention Unit (UNIC) successfully completed three complex structural cardiac interventions using an innovative imaging technology. According to cardiologist Marco Costa from the ULS of Coimbra, the procedures were performed without complications, allowing for the discharge of all three patients the following day.
Marco Costa emphasized that “4D intracardiac echocardiography represents a significant advancement over conventional techniques, providing a detailed visualization of cardiac structures without the need for transesophageal echocardiography.”
He noted that “this approach results in greater patient comfort, eliminating the need for general anesthesia in most cases,” and it complements other imaging modalities, enhancing the precision and safety of interventions.
Lino Gonçalves, Director of the Cardiology Department, stated that these procedures “are further evidence of the high level of differentiation and innovation that the department has demonstrated over the years, positioning it as a leader both nationally and internationally.”
“Cardiovascular intervention is undoubtedly one of our flagship areas, but we are also very proud of other areas such as non-invasive cardiovascular molecular imaging, advanced heart failure, and arrhythmology,” he added.
The President of the Board of Directors highlighted that “this achievement establishes ULS de Coimbra as a national benchmark in interventional cardiology and is another testament to the innovative capacity of the National Health Service [SNS] and Coimbra’s pioneering role in Health in Portugal.”
“The Cardiology Department has been, for many years, a prime example of the unique excellence of the National Health Service. The team responsible for this area – with Coimbra once again at the forefront – deserves congratulations for their distinctive work,” he emphasized.
