“I want to express that we have a problem of seriousness and transparency at the top of the government, and the question we all must ask is whether we want a prime minister who remains in office enveloped in a climate of suspicion and doubt,” stated Pedro Nuno Santos to journalists on the sidelines of the PS concelho’s municipal convention in Castelo Branco.
The weekly newspaper Expresso reported that the Public Prosecutor’s Office is investigating contracts in the Espinho Municipality, including the redevelopment of the city’s railway channel, based on an anonymous tip. It was revealed that the firm SP&M, where Luís Montenegro was a partner until 2022, is one of those named in the inquiry.
“I believe the case reported this weekend is indeed the most serious since the political crisis began in Portugal involving the prime minister,” said the Secretary-General of the PS.
Pedro Nuno Santos emphasized that the country lacks “political stability, neither in the present nor in the future, with a prime minister surrounded by suspicions.”
“The aspect of transparency and seriousness is fundamental, but equally important is achieving political stability,” he stressed.
The socialist leader underscored the need to close this chapter.
“We will not be able to close this chapter if Luís Montenegro wins the upcoming elections. The shadows of certain suspicions will continue, some of them as serious as the case reported this weekend,” he added.
