Investigation committee into INEM approves list of entities to be heard.

Marta Martins da Silva, who chairs the committee, stated that only Chega presented a list with 38 requests, and all lists were unanimously approved except for two names proposed by Chega, which were deemed unjustified by the other benches.

In today’s meeting, two timing grids were approved, and the committee’s regulations were voted on.

According to Marta Silva, all parties submitted “extensive lists of entities to hear, some of which are transversal.”

The deputy noted that the committee’s work is interrupted due to the local elections, but services can begin work on the lists approved today.

At the next meeting, following the elections or possibly on a Thursday, the deputy rapporteur will be approved, the deputy also mentioned.

The lists of individuals to be heard and documents to be analyzed were presented by the seven parties comprising the committee on Monday, with most requesting to hear the last three Health Ministers (Marta Temido, Manuel Pizarro, and Ana Paula Martins), the chair of the parliamentary inquiry committee (CPI) explained.

The parties also plan to hear from the former executive director of the National Health Service (SNS) Fernando Araújo, the former president of INEM Luís Meira, the former president of the Portuguese Firefighters League Jaime Marta Soares, and the former president of the National Authority for Emergency and Civil Protection (ANEPC) Duarte Costa.

The CPI is aimed at determining the political and managerial responsibilities of the National Institute of Medical Emergency (INEM).

On July 11, the request by IL for the establishment of this CPI was approved with votes in favor by Chega, IL, Livre, PCP, BE, PAN, and JPP, and with abstentions by PSD, PS, and CDS-PP.

The committee consists of 24 deputies: eight from PSD, five each from Chega and PS, two from IL, two from Livre, one from PCP, and one from CDS-PP.

The deputies have 90 days to determine the political, technical, contractual, legal, and financial responsibilities related to the current situation of INEM, including during the strike at the end of October and beginning of November 2024.

The inquiry committee also aims to “evaluate the relationship of the various political tutelages with INEM and clarify the intervention” of all governments since 2019 in “their respective political and financial management.”
