Traffic on National Road 120 (EN120) was preemptively halted on March 19 by Infraestruturas de Portugal (IP), after a landslide risk was detected due to severe weather conditions, as explained by the company managing Portugal’s road network.
Today, IP announced in a statement that it plans to implement a “solution to restore traffic conditions on EN120 in Aljezur,” located in the Faro district. This involves approving the launch of the project to “repair and stabilize the embankment and road platform at kilometer 128.6 of EN120.”
The procedure to execute this project is set to commence in the “coming days,” IP noted, emphasizing that the board of administration “decided to proceed immediately” with the process to begin ground implementation “as soon as possible.”
This work aims to “restore traffic and safety conditions on this section of EN120,” the statement added.
IP recalled that road traffic at kilometer 128.6 of EN120 was halted on March 19 as a “preventive safety measure” due to the landslide risk, coinciding with the passage of depression Martinho, which brought strong winds and rain to mainland Portugal and the Algarve.
“The decision to implement a traffic cut in this location was based on an evaluation indicating the risk of a landslide of the road platform caused by adverse weather conditions affecting the country, particularly the Algarve region,” it justified.
The company further mentioned that it immediately launched an “analysis, survey, and characterization of the situation” on-site and began a “campaign of geological and geotechnical exploration.”
The data obtained “will support the development of the project for repairing and stabilizing the embankment and road platform over approximately 100 meters,” it clarified.
Upon project completion, the tender for the construction will be launched, IP stated.
EN120 connects Alcácer do Sal in the Setúbal district to Lagos in the Faro district.
