The forecasts from the Portuguese Institute for Sea and Atmospheric Studies (IPMA), which placed several districts on an orange warning today, will be reassessed by the end of the day, according to on-duty meteorologist Paula Leitão.
Recent data, especially for the 30th, indicates temperatures exceeding 40 degrees in some districts, accompanied by very dry conditions and instability. This means that if a fire starts, it could be very difficult to control, explained Leitão.
Paula Leitão expressed concern over forest fires and did not specify which districts might escalate to a red warning level but did not rule out Lisbon, where high temperatures are also expected.
Today, several counties in nearly all mainland districts have been placed at ‘very high’ and ‘high’ fire risk levels by the IPMA. Additionally, 36 counties in seven districts, including the Central region and Algarve, face maximum fire risk: Guarda, Viseu, Coimbra, Castelo Branco, Santarém, Portalegre, and Faro.
In mainland Portugal, today’s forecast predicts hot weather with temperature increases, particularly the maximum, which is expected to range from 43 degrees Celsius in Beja to 25 degrees in Aveiro.
