IPMA issues alert for Wednesday due to “cold frontal surface”

The Portuguese Institute of the Sea and the Atmosphere (IPMA) warns that rainfall will be “occasionally heavy and accompanied by thunderstorms,” particularly during the frontal passage and until late Wednesday morning. Consequently, an orange alert for rainfall and a yellow alert for thunderstorms have been issued.

Gradually, from the afternoon onward, post-frontal conditions are expected to bring rainfall in the form of showers across the entire territory. These will be more intense and frequent along the northern and central coastal regions, where conditions will also favor thunderstorms and potentially hail, primarily in these regions, according to the IPMA.

Wind is expected to be “strong,” with gusts beginning tonight, with the most intense occurring during the passage of a cold front between Wednesday afternoon and early Thursday morning.

During the cold front’s passage, gusts may reach 80 kilometers per hour along the coast and 110 kilometers per hour in the highlands of the northern and central regions, with a yellow wind warning in effect for these areas.

The IPMA also anticipates increased maritime agitation on the western coast, with westerly quadrant waves measuring four to five meters, temporarily reaching between five and six meters from Wednesday night to early Thursday morning.

An orange maritime agitation alert has been issued for this period.

The IPMA recommends staying updated on the latest weather forecasts and warnings via its official website.

The IPMA has issued an orange alert for Thursday for the northern and central districts of Portugal due to maritime agitation.

For Wednesday, orange alerts are already in place for all of mainland Portugal, except the Bragança district, due to heavy rain.

Strong maritime agitation warnings target the districts of Porto, Setúbal, Viana do Castelo, Lisbon, Leiria, Aveiro, Coimbra, and Braga, effective from early to late Thursday morning, when west/northwest waves are expected to reach significant heights of five to six meters, occasionally hitting a maximum of nine meters.

In a previous statement, the IPMA had placed the districts of Porto, Faro, Setúbal, Viana do Castelo, Lisbon, Leiria, Beja, Aveiro, Coimbra, and Braga under yellow alert starting from 9 PM today due to maritime agitation, anticipating westerly/southwesterly waves of four to five meters.

The IPMA also issued an orange alert for all mainland districts except Bragança, from early to late Wednesday morning, followed by a yellow alert through early Thursday morning due to rain that could be occasionally heavy.

All 17 districts will also be under a yellow alert due to favorable conditions for thunderstorms and extreme wind events from early to late Wednesday morning.

The Bragança district will be under a yellow rain alert from 6 AM to 3 PM on Wednesday, due to occasional heavy rainfall.

A yellow alert has been issued from tonight until Wednesday morning for the districts of Bragança, Viseu, Porto, Guarda, Vila Real, Viana do Castelo, Lisbon, Leiria, Castelo Branco, Aveiro, Coimbra, and Braga due to expected strong southern quadrant winds, with gusts around 80 km/h along the coast and 100 km/h in the highlands.

The IPMA issues an orange alert in the event of “moderate to high-risk weather conditions,” while the yellow alert indicates a risk for certain activities dependent on weather conditions.
