IPMA raises alert: Seven districts go ‘red’ on Sunday

The Portuguese Institute of the Sea and the Atmosphere has upgraded warnings for the coming days to ‘red’, placing seven districts under maximum alert on Sunday.

According to the update, available on the website, the districts that will be under red alert tomorrow due to extreme heat are: Lisbon, Santarém, Castelo Branco, Portalegre, Évora, Beja, and Setúbal.

The heatwave is expected to persist until at least 9 PM on Monday, with Lisbon and Setúbal exiting the red alert and moving back to ‘orange’.

The possibility of escalating alerts in various regions due to the hot weather had already been indicated by the IPMA, which earlier this afternoon highlighted forest fires as the major concern.

On the mainland, today’s forecasts anticipate hot weather and rising temperatures, particularly the maximum temperature expected to range between 43 degrees Celsius in Beja and 25 in Aveiro.
