In a preliminary report on the Elevador da Glória accident, which resulted in 16 fatalities and approximately 20 injuries, the Office of Prevention and Investigation of Aircraft Accidents and Rail Accidents (GPIAAF) indicated that the cable connecting the two cabins of the Glória elevator, which failed at its attachment point on the derailed carriage, did not meet Carris specifications and was not certified for passenger transport.
In a statement, Carris noted that the report considers it “[…] currently impossible to state whether the discrepancies in the cable usage are relevant to the accident” and clarified that the cable acquisition process, “with alleged nonconformities that influenced the entire cable replacement process, occurred during a mandate prior to the current board of directors.”
