‘Isaltinos’ everywhere in Oeiras. Opposition speaks of “illegality”

Isaltino is “everywhere” in Oeiras. Across the municipality, there are dozens, perhaps hundreds, of campaign posters of the candidate running for mayor, who, despite running as an independent, has the support of the PSD and CDS.

Isaltino Morais, already serving two terms as mayor of Oeiras, is campaigning for a third (and final) term in the local elections on October 12. In the campaign’s final week, he decided to display posters of himself throughout the municipality, issuing a challenge on social media.

In the first video, he appears surrounded by his posters, asking, “Where is Isaltino?” drawing a parallel to “Where’s Wally?”.

In the subsequent post, he responds: “I am everywhere.”

“Look for the ‘Isaltinos’ scattered throughout the municipality, take a selfie, post the photos on social media, and use the hashtag ‘where is Isaltino'”, challenges the candidate for Oeiras.

“Whoever finds the most ‘Isaltinos’ wins a lunch with me, accompanied by someone they wish to bring to a restaurant of their choice in Oeiras”, he announces.

And he adds, “I’ll cover the cost, of course.”

Pedro Frazão criticizes campaign action and labels it “illegal”

The new campaign action, though praised by some online commentators, faced strong criticism from one of Isaltino Morais’s opponents in Oeiras.

On social media, Chega’s candidate for the municipality, Pedro Frazão, began a video stating, “Today Oeiras woke up to this disgrace right here.” Behind him, he points to one of the current mayor’s posters placed on a pedestrian sign.

Pedro Frazão explained that placing posters on traffic signs is “a practice prohibited by law and, moreover, is in very bad faith.”

The Chega candidate is correct. The National Election Commission states it is prohibited to post propaganda “on national monuments, religious buildings, headquarters of sovereignty organs, autonomous regions, or local government buildings, on traffic signs or road markings, inside any public or freely accessible buildings, including commercial establishments.”

But according to the candidate, what shocks him more isn’t even the illegality: “The most surreal part is that Isaltino’s campaign is promoting this action on social media with an invitation, you know for what? To take photos and selfies next to the posters so people can win a lunch. Look at the man’s audacity.”

“The man being investigated by the Police Judiciary for work lunch expenses amounting to about 139,000 euros still has the nerve to promise lunches to voters,” emphasized.

Pedro Frazão further compared the situation to what Isaltino Morais practices with his “clique, or his court,” reiterating that “it is a shame.”

Chega leader André Ventura also vowed on Monday to end Isaltino Morais’s tenure in Oeiras, asserting that “a thief belongs in jail” and that the party aims to be a hallmark in the fight against corruption.

“We want to end Isaltino’s tenure and the mandate of corruption, which is what we need,” said the Chega leader during a campaign event in Oeiras, where he was accompanied by the party’s candidate for mayor, Pedro Frazão.

Besides Isaltino Morais and Pedro Frazão, other candidates for the Oeiras Town Hall include Ana Sofia Antunes (PS and PAN coalition), Bruno Mourão Martins (IL), Sandra Lemos (CDU), Carla Castelo (a coalition comprising BE, Livre, and Volt), and Miguel Peixoto Parente (supported by PPM and Nós, Cidadãos!).
