Island of Corvo with a safeguard plan for the historical center

The Regional Regulatory Decree published in the Diário da República outlines a detailed plan aimed at preserving and enhancing the only urban settlement on the island, which has been classified as a Site of Public Interest since 1997.

The plan covers 12.3 hectares, focusing on the oldest part of the village of Corvo, recognized for its exceptional and original urban and typological characteristics, according to the decree’s foundation.

The government’s ratification comes as part of legislation mandating the development of safeguard plans for areas classified as sites of public interest.

This initiative is part of the strategy conceived in the Corvo Municipal Master Plan, published in 2017, which included the establishment of a planning and management operational unit for this urban core, aiming for its protection, rehabilitation, and revitalization.

The document, approved by the Municipal Assembly, received ratification through a regional regulatory decree, under the Legal Framework for Territorial Management Instruments of the Autonomous Region of the Azores.

The Detailed Safeguard Plan for the Old Core of Vila do Corvo is also part of the Integrated Urban Sustainable Regeneration Plan for Corvo (PIRUS_Corvo), funded by the Azores 2020 Operational Program, with the goal of improving the quality of the urban environment in the region.

The plan also aligns with the Strategic Plan for Prevention and Waste Management of the Azores, aiming to ensure an integrated approach to heritage preservation and sustainable development.
