It already costs more than 5€: This was the food that became more expensive this year

The price of the food basket increased last week, reaching the second highest value since January 2022, according to the weekly price monitoring by DECO PROteste. The organization reveals that coffee was the food product that increased the most in price this year.

The consumer protection organization states that “ground roasted coffee is the product that has increased the most this year, and a 250-gram package now costs 5.13 euros,” according to a statement sent to the press.

A statement on the DECO PROteste website further explains: “Ground roasted coffee is already the food basket product of DECO PROteste whose price has increased the most in percentage terms this year.”

Just last week, this product saw its price rise by 71 cents (up 16 percent). A 250-gram package of ground roasted coffee can now cost 5.13 euros,” the statement reads.

It is noted that, “on January 1 this year, the same package of coffee cost 3.81 euros, 1.32 euros less (35 percent less). A year ago, on November 6, 2024, it cost 3.03 euros, 2.10 euros less (69 percent less). About four years ago, on January 5, 2022, ground roasted coffee cost 2.99 euros, 2.14 euros less (71 percent less).”

Price of the basket keeps rising

The price of the food basket has been increasing for three consecutive weeks:

“Between October 29 and November 5, the increase was 67 cents (0.27% more), with the basket now costing 244.34 euros. This is the second highest price since DECO PROteste began this monitoring in January 2022. About four years ago, it was possible to buy exactly the same food items for 56.64 euros less (30.18 percent less),” the statement notes.

Which products increased the most?

In the last week, between October 29 and November 5, the products whose prices increased the most in percentage terms were, besides ground roasted coffee, canned tuna in vegetable oil (21% more), spiral pasta (15% more), and cooking oil (11 percent more).

Comparing this week’s prices with the first week of the year, January 1, 2025, besides coffee, the highest percentage price increases were in eggs (32% more), spaghetti (22% more), and oranges (20 percent more).

Since DECO PROteste started this analysis on January 5, 2022, the highest percentage increases have been in beef for boiling (97% more), eggs (86% more), and whole grain cereals (72 percent more).

In the first ten months of this year, the price of the food basket increased by 7.51 euros (3.18% more) and now costs 243.68 euros. “This is also one of the highest prices for this basket of essential goods since DECO PROteste began this monitoring in January 2022,” the organization highlights.
