It begins today, MURO_LX – Lisbon Urban Art Festival

The list of invited artists for this edition includes Bigod, Cab, Eko, Fled, Greb, Hesp, Hibashira, Monk, Mosaik, Nevercrew (Christian Rebecchi and Pablo Togni), Obey SKTR, Patrícia Mariano, Ricardo Romero, Smile, Tosco, and Typru, among others.

This year, the art interventions will primarily take place in neighborhoods surrounding the Águas Livres Aqueduct—namely Bairro da Bela Flor and Bairro da Liberdade—as well as at the Water Museum on Calçada dos Barbadinhos and at the Water Factory.

The 6th edition of the festival kicks off today with the opening of the exhibition ‘Marginalis’ by João Murta, which places the spectator on the “margin”, drawing a parallel between the passive process of reflecting on ocean waves and the passivity with which people confront daily political, social, and environmental issues, as described in the exhibition text.

The exhibition is displayed at the Water Factory, where the film ‘Bomb it’ by John Reiss, a 2007 documentary on graffiti and urban art, is also being screened on the same day.

Additionally, at the Water Factory, visitors can view ‘Da nossa costa’ by Teresa Calado, a collection of illustrations depicting various fish species found along the Portuguese coast, and ‘Há art no esgoto’, an exhibit featuring sewer covers reimagined by Gilberto Gaspar.

MURO also includes the exhibition “Por cima do tapete, o meu quarto”, which has been on display at Coruchéus—A Theatre in Every Neighborhood since April 12.

The Liberdade Atlético Clube hosts an exhibition of skateboards painted by the 45 participants of the international women’s graffiti festival Juntas Hacemos Más, held in April in Lisbon.

During the festival, there will be guided tours of the various exhibitions.

The full schedule for MURO_LX, which concludes on May 31, is available online at www.festivalmuro.pt.

On June 1, International Children’s Day, MINI MURO will take place, a new program entirely dedicated to children and teenagers.

Throughout the day, from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM and from 3:00 PM to 6:00 PM, several free activities will be offered at the Water Museum. These include a mural painting session led by artist KIAM, workshops for painting hats, pencil cases, backpacks, reusable water bottles, and personalized badges conducted by artists Miguel Brum and Wek, and hip-hop classes.

Initiated by the Urban Art Gallery of the Lisbon City Council, MURO first occurred in 2016 in the Carnide district (Bairro Padre Cruz). Subsequent editions were held in Marvila in 2017, Lumiar (around the Cruz Vermelha neighborhood and Alta de Lisboa area) in 2019, and Parque das Nações in 2021.

The 5th edition took place in October 2023 along the axis of Cais do Sodré, Alcântara, and Belém.

Over the five editions, artists like Brazilian Kobra, British D*Face, Portuguese Kruella D’Enfer, Robert Panda, Bordalo II, Odeith, Hazul, Godmess, André da Loba, Tamara Alves, Nomen, Mário Belém, and collectives such as RUA and Thunders Crew have participated.
