Only by identifying what failed can we implement the necessary corrections and prevent similar situations from recurring, ensuring that Lisbon remains a safe place for those who live and visit,” states the Ahresp in a statement.
Expressing “deep sorrow for the loss of life,” the association extends “heartfelt condolences to the families and friends of the victims” and wishes “a swift recovery to all the injured.”
The Ahresp also acknowledges the rescue teams that responded to the scene and expresses solidarity with all those affected by the accident.
The Glória funicular in Lisbon derailed on Wednesday, resulting in 16 fatalities and dozens of injuries, affecting both Portuguese and foreign nationals of various nationalities.
The government declared a national day of mourning for Thursday.
The Glória funicular, managed by Carris, connects Restauradores Square to the São Pedro de Alcântara Garden in the Bairro Alto, covering a distance of approximately 265 meters and is a popular attraction for tourists.
