The leader of Chega, André Ventura, confirmed that the party will support the Government’s Program on Tuesday for the sake of “political stability,” although he acknowledges it is “not good” and “will leave the country practically unchanged” regarding “issues of insecurity, economic stagnation, corruption, and immigration” in recent years.
“Criticism, suggestion, and proposal for improvement are required. This is what Chega will never stop doing to ensure the country has a political alternative and is capable of acknowledging and criticizing what is wrong. Waves of violence, low wages, low pensions, and instability. The country seems unable to find a direction, but Chega has the duty not to promote political instability in Portugal,” Ventura stated at a press conference on Monday.
Therefore, Chega “will not support the motion of rejection presented by the PCP tomorrow,” which it considers “irresponsible” and of “little expression.”
“They are irresponsible parties with little expression, holding only niches of radicalism. Toppling for the sake of toppling does not resolve the country’s issues, but Chega has no doubt that this is not a good Government Program,” added the Chega leader.
The XXV Constitutional Government’s program will be presented and debated in the Assembly of the Republic starting at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday and continuing until the end of the morning on Wednesday, beginning with an address by Prime Minister Luís Montenegro with no time limit.
The document was approved by the Council of Ministers on Thursday and submitted to the Assembly of the Republic on Saturday, including measures already listed in AD’s electoral program, such as the reduction of IRS and IRC or the increase in salaries and pensions, along with new commitments.
Only after the Government Program is reviewed and not rejected will the XXV Constitutional Government, which took office on June 5, assume its full functions.
