It was important that Marcelo was not an obstacle to the country’s security.

The leader of Chega, André Ventura, criticized the President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, asserting “it is important that he is not an obstacle to immigration control and the country’s security,” referencing the delay in signing the immigration law.

“Chega responded to the situation where the President signed two other statutes but not the immigration law. I requested a formal meeting, which has already been scheduled for Tuesday,” André Ventura told journalists in Setúbal.

He added, “We want to raise awareness with the President of the Republic about the necessity of a legislative tool to regulate borders and manage immigration.”

André Ventura further noted that Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa retains “full power” and is “fully exercising his functions,” given that the President is nearing the end of the term.

“Until the law is changed, people continue to enter Portugal daily, and this situation, if not resolved or at least mitigated, will present us with problems for decades,” he stated.

The Chega leader emphasized that the party aims to “sensitize” Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa regarding: “This was not our law, it would probably not be the PSD’s law either; it was the possible negotiation in a Parliament configured with this majority.”

“It was important for the President of the Republic not to be an obstacle to immigration control and national security,” he concluded.
