“It will cause challenges.” Tomorrow there is an eclipse and energy production will be affected.

REN – Redes Energéticas Nacionais announced on Friday that will reduce solar energy production by more than 20%.

In a statement, REN mentioned that “in close collaboration with other European power grid operators, it has been preparing the National Electric System (NES) for the effects of the partial solar eclipse that will occur tomorrow, March 29.”

“The phenomenon will take place in the mainland territory between 9:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m., causing an estimated generation loss of 560 MW, which represents about 8.5% of consumption and 23% of the National Electric System’s production expected for this period,” the note continues.

“Will cause operational challenges”

REN stated that “during the eclipse, a loss of 10 MW per minute is estimated, with a recovery rate of 22 MW per minute, which will cause operational challenges related to balancing generation and consumption in the NES and controlling the deviation in the interconnection with Spain.”

“To mitigate the impacts of the generation loss associated with this eclipse, it will be necessary to allocate additional reserves with hydroelectric and/or thermal generation,” the statement reads.

REN further clarifies that the “estimated values only represent centralized solar production measured by REN, excluding other solar production associated with some Self-Consumption Production Units, which will also affect the increase in consumption.”

“This effect is also being estimated by REN and properly anticipated in the consumption forecasts for that day, in order to reduce and mitigate, in real time, any unexpected effects,” it highlights.
