“There have been so many predictions of disappearance, and they never came true. The Bloc is a party that has strength. It is in a difficult situation, obviously, it needs to change to grow, obviously,” said Pureza upon arriving at the grand meeting starting today in Lisbon that marks Mariana Mortágua’s farewell from the party’s leadership.
The former vice-president of Parliament anticipated two days of discussions on “ways and means to gain strength,” but especially about the party being at the “service of the struggles of those without power and those being attacked by the far-right, by the extreme right.”
“We need to have the ability, with intelligence, with humility, to engage in all the necessary dialogues so that the Left regains initiative and strength in our country. The Bloc has that in its DNA and will seek to fulfill it,” he assured.

Another basis of a prospective leadership, according to Pureza, is the need for BE to “change procedures and organizational culture.”
“We must be an organization with much greater capacity for involvement, much greater capacity to treat militancy well, to stimulate militancy. That is absolutely fundamental, and we must organize ourselves for that, and I think there is a unanimous will in this direction,” he emphasized.
