The Portuguese cyclist Iúri Leitão became today the world champion of the Olympic omnium discipline, achieving in Glasgow one of the greatest international achievements of the Portuguese in the sport.

Iúri Leitão won the first two of the four races of the discipline, namely scratch and time, and was second in the pursuit, then defending his leading position in the points race.

The 25-year-old runner from Viana, who already has podiums in other categories, had a bronze in the omnium discipline, but in Europeans, in 2020.

The World Cup is important for the Olympic track qualification ranking for Paris2024, with the vacancy being for the country, after Portugal was represented in Tokyo2020 only by Maria Martins, seventh in omnium.
