The Jazz in the Park festival will take, between Friday and Sunday, to the park of Barreiro, in the district of Setúbal, artists such as the Americans Chris Cheek, Mark Turner and Fred Hersch, among many others, with free admission.
The event, curated by Jorge Moniz, begins on Friday with Ignition, by Paulo Bernardino, Manuel Rocha, Tomás Marques, and Joel Silva, followed, on the same night, by the Shai Maestro Quartet, from the Israeli jazz pianist who gives it its name and who will return to Portugal almost a month later for Jazz na Praça da Erva, in Viana do Castelo.
The second day of Jazz in the Park begins with the Barreiro Jazz School, which will give way to the collective Do Acaso, which brings together Joana Raquel (voice), Sofia Sá (voice), Pedro Matos (tenor saxophone), Hugo Silva (trumpet), André Ramalhais (trombone), Tiago Baptista (vibraphone), Catarina Rodrigues (keys, synthesizer and voice), Miguel Meirinhos (piano), Sara Santos Ribeiro (double bass), Zé Stark (drums), Jan Wierzba (direction) and Rui Spranger (actor), according to a statement from the organization of the festival.
Later, Ricardo Pinheiro’s quintet will perform with American saxophonist Chris Cheek in a concert that will bring together Mário Laginha, Michael Formarek, and Alexandre Frazão.
Saturday night closes with Mark Turner’s quartet, performing the album “Return from the Stars”.
On Sunday, the afternoon opens with the Jazz Academy “Os Franceses”, followed by the João Mortágua Math Trio with Tomás Marques, before Fred Hersch’s trio closes Jazz in the Park.
“A 15-time Grammy nominee, Hersch regularly receives jazz’s most prestigious awards, including recent honors such as 2016 Doris Duke Artist, 2016 and 2018 Jazz Pianist of the Year from the Jazz Journalists Association, and the 2017 Prix Honorem de Jazz from L’ Acádemie Charles Cros for his career,” the organization’s statement reads.
